شب

شب در تگزاس به نیمه می رسد

و در نیویورک از نیمه می گذرد.

روز در سوئد تازه پلک می گشاید

تنها در "شهر فرشتگان" است که شب

مرا رها نمی کند.

بازوانم را در بر می گیرم

پلک هایم را می بندم

و چون سنگپاره ای تنها

خود را به درون شب پرتاب می کنم.

شاید در تگزاس

پنجره ی خوابگاهی را بگشاید

یا در نیویورک بر بام خانه ای فرود آید.

اما جهان گرد است

و تنهایی سنگین این شب

تنها بر جان من می نشیند.

زمان به من پشت کرده است

و زمین چون چاه سیاهی

زیر پایم دهان گشوده است.

می گذارم تا از همه ی مرزها بگذرم

و چون شهابی به دور خویش به گردش درآیم.

اما ناگهان آوای نرمه زنگی

مرا به زمین بازمی گرداند.

روز در اصفهان هنوز به نیمه نرسیده

و مادرم که در ایوان

ناخن های پدرم را می گیرد

صدای سقوط سنگپاره ای را

در حوض خانه شنیده است.

The Night

The night is half over in Texas

And it is past midnight in New York.

The day is opening its eyes in Sweden

Only in the City of Angels

Does the night not leave me alone.

I clasp my arms around myself

Close my eyes

And like a single rock

I throw myself into the night.

Perhaps in Texas

It will open the window of a bedroom

Or land on a rooftop in New York.

But the world is round

And the heavy loneliness of this night

Only returns to my soul.

Time has turned its back on me

And the earth has opened its mouth

Like a dark well

Under my feet.

I pass through all borders

And like a shooting-star

Orbit around myself.

But suddenly the soft ring of a call

Brings me back to earth.

In Isfahan the day is not half over

And my mother

Who is clipping my father s nails on the porch

Has heard the sound of a falling rock

In our swimming pool. *
