Statement of Iranian Republicans' Organization

If today the regime of Muammar Gaddafi comes to an end after forty years of despotic rule,

in Syria people are still battling the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad peacefully and courageously. So far Bashar has decimated more than 2000 of the population and yet despite the promise of reform continues the Repression.

The authoritarian regime of Syria has enjoyed considerable backing of the Islamic Republic of Iran trying to crackdown the Syrian democratic movement. Iran’s Ghods Revolutionary Guard Corps has provided a great deal of assistance to security services and oppressive forces in Syria.

We condemn the collaboration of the Islamic Republic of Iran in violent clampdown of Syrian protestors by Bashar al-Assad and declare our solidarity with democratic movement in Syria. The role of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the repression in Syria is not only incompatible with international covenant on civil and political rights, but also is against the national interest of Iran.

In these sensitive times, the democratic movements in Iran and Syria have congruent faith. Both nations live under dictatorships which are partners in their repressive rules. It is appropriate that the two nations join forces in the course of their passage to a successful and lasting democracy and establish a long lasting and constructive relationship between the two countries.

We are certain that the Middle Eastern undertaking to attain freedom and democracy will not stop. People learn from one another’s experiences and add to lessons in democracy. The second decade of this century which started with the Iranian attempt to pursue democracy and freedom is now headed to crumble all the dictatorships in any shape and form in the region. In the near future Middle East will be the new democratic territory.

We, as one of the political organizations within the democratic movement of Iran disclose to the people of Syria that the role of Islamic Republic of Iran in oppressing the peaceful protests in Syria has nothing to do with the people of Iran who themselves are striving for democracy and freedom. Iranians support their Syrian counterpart in their struggle and deem their efforts in accordance with our own values.

At this sensitive juncture in history, we demand that the international community, democratic governments and the United Nations take a more resolute stance in supporting the Syrian nation to carry out their democratic ambitions.
