For Attention of the UN Human Rights Council Assembly in Geneva

Protest against Broad and Continued Human Rights Violations in Iran!

We, some republican parties and organisations who are struggling for freedom, equality, separation of religion from state, democracy, human rights and against all kinds of discrimination, call on all democratic and freedom-loving forces to join efforts in the fight for the release of political prisoners and in protest against human rights violations in Iran.

Crude and broad violations against human rights in Iran continue. The regime of the Islamic Republic has still not allowed UN Special Representative Ahmad Shaheed to visit the country and its prisons. Meanwhile the regime as even intensified the violence against activists of social movements and defenders of human rights. Arrests, torture, fictitious accusations as well as issuing long imprisonment and execution sentences still continue.

The twentieth regular session of the UN Human Rights Council which will be held from 18 June to 6 July 2012 coincides with the third anniversary of protests by millions of Iranian citizens in the aftermath of the presidential elections on 12 June 2009 in Iran. The regime’s response to that protests were assassinations, repression, arrests and torture imposed on thousands. The regime’s crimes against the protesters and people seeking freedom, physical assaults and terror in the streets, torture, murders and rapes in the prisons, overrunning bodies with vehicles will not be forgotten. The innocent face of Sohrab Arabi, the young man killed on 15 June 2009, the bright smile of Neda Agha-Soltan, the young woman shot on 20 June 2009, and dozens of other young Iranians who became victims of the regime’s gunmen or were murdered in the prisons and torture chambers will not vanish from the memories of the Iranian people.

After three years, still many of the people arrested during the protests of millions, among them political and civil rights activists, members of workers’, women’s, students’, ethnic and human rights movements, advocates of political prisoners, journalists and bloggers are in prison. Mir-Hosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroobi, two presidential candidates, are under house arrest.

Repressions against the opposition in Iran continue unabatedly. The regime tries to disappoint the Iranian people about the perspective and liveliness of the movement which involved millions of Iranians in the democratic struggle and showed in all clarity that the main direction of the Iranian people’s fight and demands since the emergence of the Islamic Republic is the implementation of the basic principles of the universal Charter of Fundamental Rights, including the right of self-determination.

In Iran, political prisoners are subject to bad treatment and bereaved of their human rights. They are interrogated permanently and suffering from endless cruelty. Mistreatments in prisons are the normality. The medical needs of ill prisoners are being abused as a means to defeat them. The lives of many political prisoners are at risk. Currently some of the prisoners are seriously ill and need special medical treatment, but the regime’s interrogators refuse to respect the prisoners’ fundamental human rights. Narges Mohammadi, Mohammad-Sedigh Kaboodvand and Hosein Ronaghi-Kermani are among the prisoners needing medical treatment. After months of protests, Reza Shahabi was finally hospitalised.

On the occasion of the UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva, we call the public to raise the voice of protest against the broad human rights violation, torture and mistreatment of political prisoners, issuing execution and long prison sentences on political opponents and demand the release of political prisoners, and end to arrests and torture against the opponents of the regime.

We, some republican parties and organisations who are struggling for freedom, equality, separation of religion from state, democracy, human rights and against all kinds of discrimination, call on all democratic and freedom-loving forces to join efforts in the fight for the release of political prisoners and in protest against human rights violations in Iran. We call on all our members to participate in meetings and actions to be held for this purpose all over the world and to support the measures and activities of human rights organisations and groups in the campaign against human rights violations.
